What is an ISP?
An ISP or Internet Service Provider provides access to the Internet for a monthly fee. Typically you receive a username, password, and an e-mail account. Internet access is provided using a wide range of technologies, but is usually provided through modems, cable television lines, or digital subscriber lines (DSL).
What is a URL?
URL stands for "universal resource locator". This is the web site address which is typed in to view a specific web page on the Internet.
For example, to load up Elehost Web Design's home page you would type in http://www.elehost.com.
The URL has several parts to it. The first part (http://) tells your Internet browser, such as Firefox, what type of document you are attempting to load. In the above example the HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol.
If you are connecting to a secured web site the first part of the URL will be https:// (you simply add an "S" to the end of "HTTP"). The security of a web site can and should be verified if you are going to be purchasing a product or service. This can be done within your browser by clicking on the SSL icon used by your browser. Most web stores and order forms do not typically take you to a secured page until you reach the payment page requiring entry of your credit card.

What is web hosting?
Web hosting is a service we provide which makes your web site accessible on the Internet to view in programs, called browsers, like Firefox and Chrome.
We provide web hosting for our clients for a fee which is billed in 3 or 6 month intervals.
We do not require a set hosting period in our hosting contract so you can cancel at any time and we will refund you the amount for any full months you have left in your hosting period. Please see our terms for service for more information.
We also offer a 30 day money back guarantee so there is very little risk to try out how great Elehost's hosting service really is.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is a unique sequence of letters and numbers that can be used to identify a website on the Internet. A domain name is case-insenstive, can only contain letters, numbers and dashes, and must start with a letter or a number.
A domain name must end with a period followed by a sequence of letters that comprise what is called a top level domain (TLD).
There are generic top level domains (gTLD) such as .com or .org. There are country code top level domains (ccTLD) such as .ca.
If you wish to host a website you need to register a domain name.
The cost for registering a domain will depend on the domain's TLD.
The www. that you often see in web site URL's is not part of a domain name.
A website can have more then one domain name that loads up the same site. Some companies register multiple domain names for one web site to ensure a competitor does not register a similar domain name to try to take away possible clients or visitors who type that domain name into their browser.
You can register a domain with Elehost Web Design Inc. to take advantage of our premium service but this is not required to have us host or design your web site.
