Web Hosting

This section includes some of the frequently asked questions about our web hosting services. If you have any questions about how we can help you with your web hosting, e-commerce integration, or in setting up a CMS based web site, such as Joomla or WordPres, then please don't hesitate to contact us at 416-203-6798.

What are the specifications for a domain name?

While the total length of a domain name may be up to sixty-four (64) characters including the ending (e.g. .com), the only characters allowed are letters, digits (numbers), and the dash (-). A domain name cannot, however, begin or end with a dash.

The "www" which almost always comes before the domain name in a web-site address is not, in fact, part of the domain name. It has simply become a standard practice to write "www." in front of a domain name.

Domain names can be registered with any accredited domain registrar.  However, you can also register a domain through Elehost.  Elehost uses the ICANN accredited registrar OpenSRS.

What is FTP?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is the simplest method for moving files between computers over the Internet.  Most clients will make changes to their sites by editing the files on their own computer and then sending the files to one of our web servers using an FTP program.

There are many FTP programs available today and some of them are free. The one we typically recommend to clients is a program called FileZilla.

To find out more information on FileZilla please visit http://filezilla-project.org

Do you register domains?

Elehost Web Design Inc is not a Domain Registrar. We are an authorized reseller of the Domain Registrar OpenSRS.  As a result we can offer access to a company that will allow you to register and renew domain names.

Elehost Web Design Inc. can provide assistance with many of the issues in domain maintenance to make it an easier process for our customers. However, for security reasons we cannot edit the information on file for your domain including the address, telephone number and e-mail address you enter when registering your domain.

You will be asked to create a username and password when you register a domain.  You should keep this log-in information in a secure location as this information will be required when making any future changes to the domain name.

How long does it take to set up a website?

In order to host a website you need to have a domain name and you need to rent space on a live web server.

If you are registering a new domain name it takes about 24-48 hours for the domain to become active.  If you already own a domain name and you wish to host a website with us you need to change the name severs for your domain to:

ns.elehost.com
ns1.elehost.com
ns4.elehost.com

It usually takes 24-48 hours for changes to the name servers for a domain to take effect.

To rent web space on our servers you need to sign up for a hosting plan.  Once we receive your order we set up space on one of our servers to meet your hosting needs.  A new web hosting account is usually set up on the same day the request is received.

How is payment handled?

Our flexible method of billing permits you to pay at intervals of 3 months or 6 months. Hosting fees are like rent and are due at the start of each hosting period.

We accept Interac e-Transfer, cheque or money order, VISA and MasterCard.

Payment must be received before the following hosting period begins to keep the account in good standing.
